pouring concrete pad in seperate pours
The pad itself is approx 6' X 11' with the thickness being 5'' in the
middle with a gentle slope on the edges(added strength). This in turn puts
the area around the wood formsat 8'' thick.l will only have one other
helper (using cement mixer) so l would like to know if l can pour approx
3-4'' deep concrete the night before pour day just where the deeper edges
are(approx 24'' wide). Things to consider; Possibility of driving car over pad in future. Base is compacted and surface is crushed rock Using rebar mat (1/4''dia ?) Thanks Some good replys comming in.l should mention l only have a two hour time frame with my helper. After that l am on my own.
Pour a 6' x 5.5' pad the night before & then do the rest the
next day. Two layers of concrete are not as good as one layer. Put a
piece of plywood or whatever you have for forms down the middle & then
take it out the next day for the second pour. This will also lessen the
chances of it cracking. You would need to have two separate meshes. The
compaction that you have done is the biggest factor. If you are in a place
with ice & frost then realize that moisture can & will get between the layers & thus separate them--not in a week but over time.
so far you have done everything right ..however you will be
wrong to do it two coat ..even adding the rest whilst it still green
..you only need just over a cu yd of concrete .that is nothing .working on
an average depth of 6''..6x11=66.. ..6''thick=33 cu ft .27 in cu yd .im a
builder in uk .have mixed more than 4 cu yds in a day .on my own ..and by
hand ..no mixer .so please don't say its too hard ..by the time you have
finished you will be pleased with yourself amazing what you can do when you try hard enough !
It sounds to me like you have it well under control. I might
also use vertical rebar lenghts to solidify the connection between ur base
pour & surface pours.
I can not help you with ur additional help, however, if you wish to (in
the future) drive ur car on this slab, you NEED to reinforce ur connection
from ur lower level to ur surface level. Not horizontally, but vertically. As you have it designed, the weakest point is the center. If you do not tie ur first pour to ur second, you will weaken ur design, which has essential good merit.
Yes but use a 3'' top layer.
leave the surface of the first layer rough so the top layer has something
to adhere to.
